Weavers Fields East London 2002 - 03
A commission from LB Tower Hamlets (as a result of a competitive bid)to do a public artwork at Weavers Fields, named after the Huguenot silkweavers who lived and worked there. This involved workshops with localschools and community groups and references the history of the area. The theme of workshops was 'weaving identities', exploring individualidentities and group identities - then asking participants to produceimages to weave both of these identities together. This resulted in 400bricks being carved by participants to go around the base of thesculpture in a ëwoven brickí structure. The sculpture itself is a 7mtall pyramid structure of shallow relief figures ñ based on realactivities and people in the fields - in cast stainless steel. Insidethe structure of figures are five twisted 'bolts of shot silk' usingcolourtex stainless steel in a helix around the central column.Completion: completed 9 Dec 2003. Budget: £78,000.
